Style Challenge: What to Wear to a Wine Tasting

Orion Tunic via Of A Kind

I looked at the weather forecast for this weekend, which I hardly ever do by the way- it’s more like wake up, open curtains, does it look warm? Yes, get dressed, step out, oh goodness it’s freaking cold, throw on a layer, RUSH LIKE HELL. And just when I thought we were comfortably transitioning into real Fall weather, it is going to be a sunny and warm 80+ degrees on Sunday and Monday here in NYC. Hello again summer!

My friends over at Posh Agency are hosting a vineyard tour over the long weekend and I thought it’d be cool to share my outfit inspiration for frolicking around [and drinking plenty o’ wine] in wine country.

Girly casual: long flowy skirt, cotton tank, wedges or flats, and a neutral carryall. [Vest optional]

Haute colorblock: button up and chiffon midi skirt or skinny denim in bright bold hues.

Welcome to the jungle: I normally don’t endorse animal print pants, but these and this awesome snake print pair from Zara are worth whipping out any time! Pair with a classic white oxford for a polished look.

Edgy: leather mini with a bright silk tank, mix with army green blazer or jacket and a killer clutch.

Menswear inspired: Structured blazer, crisp white cotton tee, and personally, I’d pair it with a sheer maxi skirt.

Tips:

  • Stick with wedges, [flat] boots, or flats. I’d stay away from those stilettos, there’s nothing worse than poking holes in the grass with your killer heels.
  • Layer up, you never know what surprises the temperature has in store.
  • Pack a stain remover (Tide To Go hello), nothing is worse than sporting a red wine stain in all your photos.

Feeling inspired yet? I am!

Statement Jewelry You’ll Want to Wear

You’re so fine you blow my mind, hey Micky! Sorry I couldn’t resist…

I visited the Micky London showroom this week along with some of the other NYC Fashion Bloggers. Most of their collection consisted of their signature printed and jewelry scarves, but I was immediately drawn to the assortment of jewelry. There was such a variety of bright, bold colors— so naturally I got all snap happy.

Plenty of options for stacking. Right?

How to Style a Leopard Dress

Headed out to Central Park for an afternoon of strolling, sushi, and movies (PS. What’s Your Number is great) with Danny and Felipe. We stopped at a few places to shoot photos, no matter how many times I go to Central Park I always seem to discover a hidden gem or a rock or enclave.

Do you ever notice how suede has this “transitional” quality, in my case it’s terrible. In some pictures my boots look dull and dusty and in others they look pretty vibrant. Le sigh. Anyway, I picked up this leopard slip dress at Forever21 and of course since leopard is totally in (DUH!), it’s just as easy to look trashy (see: Snooki) as it is to look damn good in your animals prints. I chose to pair the dress with my comfy cashmere sweater, to mute the print and make it more casual.

This is my hair pre-haircut (I went to Arrojo today and snipped off a few inches!) and post-dragon (read: extensions) removal. I was feeling quite regular and I was dying for something more fashion and more edgy. Can’t wait to share the pics of my haircut here on the blog! Excited…

Just Glasses

No makeup, no fuss hair, and no “outfit”. I’ve been meaning to take pics of my Warby Parker At Home Try-Ons, so I did it this morning as soon as I got out of bed (as you can tell!). I really just wanted to look at which pair would be best for my face before the fancy schmancy stuff comes into play.

If you don’t know Warby Parker, you should! They operate on the buy a pair, give a pair mantra (similar to TOMS) and all of their frames and lenses are priced at $95. To say they’re affordable is an understatement and each and every style is well…stylish

Crosby in Greystone

Willoughby in Striped Chestnut even though I wanted Checkered Revolver (it wasn’t avail for try-on at the time)

Griffin in Revolver Black

Tenley in Midnight Blue

Preston in Whiskey Tortoise

I really like the Willoughby but the Crosby is beginning to steal my heart! I know they all look black, but they’re not woops! That’s why I listed the colors I chose next to the style names. Anywho, which ones do you like the best?

Wear It Your Way: Simone

For this edition of Wear It Your Way, I asked Simone a blogger pal of mine to participate! We met in February and I was glad I had the chance to visit her before she moved to San Francisco. She’s a great girl, who loves supporting great causes and I knew I had to approach her when I started the Wear It Your Way series.

1. Why did you choose the item?
I’ve been excited about Emergy ever since Ashley told me about it.  I love how the pieces from this collection are made by Rwandan women; I like all the jewelry I buy to have a story behind it and if it helps empower a community or an artist, that’s even better!  It took me forever to decide on a piece… I wanted them all!  Ultimately, I chose this necklace because it’s delicate but still makes a statement and because I need more color in my wardrobe.

2. Why did you pair it with this outfit?
During summer, I live in easy basics like this jersey dress with silk paneling from J. Crew. They’re comfortable and keep me cool, but I get bored with my summer wardrobe very quickly. Standout accessories like my Emergy necklace and my electric blue Clare Vivier clutch are a great way to breathe life into a tired wardrobe, and I like the way the green of the necklace pops against all the neutrals in my outfit.  The clutch is kind of difficult to pair with other accessories, so I needed jewelry that would work with it rather than fight against it.  This necklace does the trick!

3. Describe your style:
My style is very eclectic; I’ll wear a fluffy tulle skirt and pearls one day and a ratty t-shirt with skinny jeans, a giant scarf and a cashmere boyfriend cardigan the next.  As a young professional fresh out of college, my clothing budget is pretty tiny; I need to get a lot of mileage out of my clothes.  This means that I wear a lot of neutrals and use my accessories to make my outfits interesting.  As I mentioned in the first question, I like my jewelry to tell a story or have meaning behind it.  I get a lot of my jewelry when I travel or from companies like Emergy that work with artisans and smaller designers.  I also like to wear a lot of my mom’s old jewelry.  She was a kind of a hippie in the 70’s and her style is still very bohemian, so she has a lot of great pieces.  Since I moved from New York back to the Bay Area, I’ve really embraced that sort of easy California style that is chic, but casual and not super trendy.

How adorable is Simone’s puppy, Olive???

DIY: All That Glitters…

I’ve gotten a few inquiries about how I DIY’d my fuschia pumps. I already did the DIY, so I can’t exactly walk you through it step by step, but I’ll show you what you need and a close up of all the places (on the shoe) I covered with fabulosity.

I was inspired by A Pair and A Spare’s Miu Miu glitter heels of shoes.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 Bottle of Elmer’s glue
  • 1 container of extra fine glitter (it’s important to use extra fine, because the bigger flakes look…well, cheap. This bottle of Recollections glitter was very reasonably priced at $3.99)
  • A paintbrush (not pictured, but almost any paintbrush will do)
  • A container for the glue/glitter mixture (not pictured)

From there on, it’s really simple as pie!

I mixed about half of the glitter and a full bottle (1.25 FL oz) of glue. This will all depend on how much of the shoe you want to cover, of course. Then I took my paintbrush and went to work. The good part about working with glue and glitter is that you can sprinkle the glitter you didn’t use for the mixture directly on top of the spots you painted to fill in any gaps (and it sticks! WOOP!). That saved me from having to do another coat. Wait for it to dry, I’d let them sit overnight just in case, then use hairspray (extra hold) to seal the glitter. I used Tresemme Holding Spray and none of it has flaked off! The entire project minus drying time took a total of 30 mins max. Here’s the outcome!

I’ve gotten a slew of compliments on them. I would wear them all the time but these shoes hurt my feet. Woops! At least they’re super mega pretty to look at now. Bling!

I posted this photo before, but here I am in the shoes:

Voila!
