Remixing Your Business Attire

Here’s part two of my photo excursion with Jessie. Usually the wind does not cooperate with my hair, so you can only imagine how excited I was to see the end result of these photos. The wind worked like Beyonce’s wind machine and not like a violent twister as per usual. Score!

I had a few meetings during my trip to New York, including this one at Tip or Skip, and I chose to be a little business-y in my dress. I swiped a blazer from Jessie’s closet, threw on a top from Mikkat Market, black skinnies, and my favorite Ash Shoes. Business in the front, party all around!

Where are you living? Brooklyn, NY. Born, raised, and never leaving :)

Describe your style.

This is a wonderful question. I am a lover of classic silhouettes with funky updates [either color or print] with a street sensibility. How does living in Brooklyn affect your style? Living in Brooklyn my whole life completely shaped my style. I have three older brothers, so I became a bit of a brand whore at a young age. They were really in to Polo and Tommy Hilfiger when we were younger, and I always tried to shape my style into the feminine counterpart of what they would wear.

I am also deeply influenced by the art around me; in my household, on the streets, and in local museums, and am a die-hard for graphic and tribal prints, along with art driven apparel and accessories. Where do you find inspiration when you don’t know what to wear? I most often look towards menswear. I like the clean shapes, and no-fuss stylings. I also look to album art of my favorite artists, fashion mags, and colors around me. Color is a constant inspiration in my outfit choices.

Name 2 of your favorite items in your closet.

Only two! Sigh. I would have to say my Rebecca Minkoff MAB satchel in Almond because the neutral tone works with 98% of my wardrobe, and my Theodora & Callum pink Navajo tie- all scarf because it is a large scale ethnic print with great neutrals and color pops in shades of pink and green.

My outfit: Black silk blouse: Joe Fresh, Red orange denim: Uniqlo, Peep-toe wedges: Julian Louie for Aldo, Bag: Rebecca Minkoff MAB, Necklace and Bracelet: OKM (www.thebestofokm.com)

This outfit reflects my unique style because it encompasses all things I like.

The color black: a staple for all NY girls. I included black in one of my favorite blouse silhouettes (oxford), but feminine in a silk fabrication

Color pop: seen in my lip color (NARS Red Square), and Uniqlo denim

Slim pant: an everyday thing for me. I love straight and skinny styles with a medium rise.

Ethnic/bold print: pulls the outfit together at the feet. I die for these Julian Louie Aldo wedges. So unconventional, they make my heart sing!

Simple leather handbag: my MAB satchel always works. I love simple handbags in great leathers with gold hardware.

Give your advice for leading a stylish life.

To me, living a stylish life encompasses so much more than fashion choices. It is about knowing oneself and sticking to it, no matter what people think. To be an individual, in your fashion choices, the foods you eat, and activities you engage in, and to do these things confidently, and with flair.

I definitely agree that black is a NY girl staple and I absolutely love her advice for leading a stylish life. What do you think?

Let’s talk about shoes, darling! Right before Fashion Week, I “met” Kathryn via social media. I totally fell in love with her company, Protect Your Pumps, and tested out the product during NYFW. I spoke to Kathryn to get the deets on her, PYP, and her background. Click ‘read more’ for the interview!

What’s your background?

I am originally from Milwaukee, WI. I studied Business at Tuskegee University in Alabama where I graduated from in 2007. After graduation I worked as an accountant and was bored to tears, it so wasn’t for me. I decided to go back to school. I graduated from University of Wisconsin Law School in May 2011. While I was in law school I got a part time retail sales job and fell in love! It was something about clothes, shoes, and people that got me excited about going to work! Since that part time job, I’ve worked for several major retailers such as Gap, Neiman Marcus, and J.Crew.

What inspired you to create Protect Your Pumps:

I saw a lady at the department store with the cutest pair of heels on and she sat down at the make up counter crossed her legs and the soles of her shoes were so damaged looking, and I thought well thats not a pretty sight. I came home that evening and looked through my closet and sure enough the soles of all my heels looked the same way (many of them I had only worn 1 or 2 times). I also noticed that during fashion shows, sometimes stores would put different types of tape on the shoes to keep the soles clean. I thought there should be something for the consumer who cares about protecting the soles of their shoes. I began working on a prototype and searching for adhesive suppliers and the rest is history!

What’s next for Protect Your Pumps?

There is so much more in store for Protect Your Pumps, the most immediate is the release of the special adhesive for Louboutins and other painted soles, which will be available on our website very soon. In addition, I know guys don’t wear pumps but some type of adhesive would be perfect for the guys who love their Ferragamo and Gucci dress shoes!

What’s your favorite pair of shoes you’ve “saved” with PYP?

The blue Goodie shoe by Badgley Mischka. That shoe is so beautiful, I had to save it!

My thoughts:

I wore PYP all throughout Fashion Week. It took me one try to apply them correctly, but I’d definitely wear them to protect and preserve a brand new pair of shoes.

Spice Up Your Camera: DIY Chain Link Strap

This weekend I instagrammed a pic of a random and impulsive DIY project I took on on Friday. I never attached the strap that came with my camera because I wanted something snazzy lol. After months of dealing, I realized just how much I needed a practical AND snazzy camera strap after fumbling with my cam all night while out at an event. I’d seen the Chanel inspired chain link straps and thought they were cool, but I wanted to do my own thing. A little chain, a little leather, and a lot of snazz.

I bought all my materials from Michael’s (total cost $10), but I bet it’d be twice as fun to find vintage materials and re-purpose them. What you need:

Chain- you can find this at Michael’s or your local craft store, at vintage jewelry online, from a vintage or thrift store, or from your jewelry box!)
A leather strap- I used a leather bracelet that I found at Michael’s
Pliers

Where are you living?

Upper East Side, dangerously close to Fifth Avenue. It is actually a hazard.

Describe your style.

Nothing is more nauseating than a fashion victim, so I believe in mixing my own personality (say vintage, or a biker jacket stolen from an ex) with the most expensive, amazing things I can hunt down and wrestle a few other girls for.

My style is urban grunge with a feminine twist and sometimes a dose of the clinically insane, so my favorite designers are Wang, Proenza, Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Gareth Pugh, Balenciaga and Margiela. My look can be described as Marie Antoinette going to a Motley Crue show in 1980s New York, getting slipped a roofie by a homeless person and having a one-night stand with Sid Vicious after already making out with Keith Richards and then getting really upset about what a hussie she is and taking herself to Bergdorf’s to buy herself a little something Chanel.

How does living in New York affect your style?

Living in New York affects my style in a very diverse yet very financial way. In other words, my style is varied thanks to the myriad of different types of stores New York has to offer, and it is always changing and unique – but I will never have a savings account or own a home or get to participate any other grown-up activities, because everywhere you are in this city there is somewhere amazing to shop. From the designer shops on Fifth Ave and the vintage stores in Chelsea to the punk dive boutiques in the East Village and the indie designer havens in Brooklyn, I’m constantly being bombarded by things I have to buy. Because this disadvantage will deprive me of long-term financial stability or any semblance of a normal life, I have reached out to Sally Struthers to sponsor me in an adoption campaign: Save a Starving Fashion Girl Only Not With Food, Please. For a mere $1,000 a month, you can contribute to keeping a smile on my face and designer threads on my back. Where do you find inspiration when you don’t know what to wear?

Of course I take inspiration from runway collections and street style snaps, but when I need to delve further – depending on my mood – I turn to character types and icons of past and present. Sometimes I channel Iggy Pop and smear some dirt across my Balmain tee for street cred. Sometimes I look to Catherine the Great and cover myself in a cape and Byzantine jewels. Or maybe one day I’ll look to Kate Middleton and wear a wrap dress with nude tights. Just kidding on that last one. I couldn’t even keep a straight face for that.

What’s your advice for leading a stylish life?

You have to make style a priority. I know you’re going to have jobs and boyfriends and friends, but if those jobs, boyfriends and friends are really right for you, they’ll understand that they come second. You have to be on-call 24/7 – what if you suddenly see online that there’s an Opening Ceremony sample sale happening right this second? What if your friend texts you that she’s standing in Bergdorf and there’s only one pair of those Miu Miu booties you’re dying for left and they’re in your size? What are you, not going to go because your sister’s in labor or your friend is graduating law school? Just make it up to them with something pretty and expensive, which you’ll be able to afford with the money you saved by making it to that sample sale. But remember that the biggest rule is pretending that you didn’t just do any of what I said and that you really don’t care, you just naturally look like that.

Name 2 of your favorite items in your closet:

My Christopher Kane aqua gel clutch – which was scored at a price too obscenely low to mention – and my sleeveless YSL trench. As you can see, I favor things that are practical and sensible.

Outfit 1: This is a casual look I might wear for anything from brunch to drinks at night. Comfortable and laid-back but still a little rock and roll. I don’t wear jeans so burgundy crushed-velvet bell bottoms are my go-to pants for off-duty days. Vest is Alexander Wang, T-shirt is vintage Harley Davidson, burgundy crushed-velvet bell bottoms are from Urban Outfitters, necklace is Eddie Borgo, assorted rings and bracelets, bag is Proenza Schouler, hair is inspired by the Martine Rose FW12 show [Editor’s note: LOL!!].

Outfit 2: This is something I would most likely wear to work – it’s polished but still a little schizo, just the way I like it. Varsity jacket is rag & bone, star blazer is from Zara, nude blouse is from some little hole-in-the-wall store in Nolita I don’t remember the name of, skirt is Adam, boots are Swedish Hasbeens, bag is Chloé, necklace is Eddie Borgo.

Outfit 3: I’d wear this going out at night. Or during the day. Or to work. This is my version of versatility. Nothing says “ready-for-anything” like a technicolored Navajo print and some fringe. Cat sweater is Opening Ceremony, Navajo-print shirt is from Urban Outfitters, fringe skirt is from H&M, boots are Miu Miu, clutch is Christopher Kane, rings are YSL and an aggressive flea market vendor.

A few week’s ago, I read IFB’s Blogger Workout Plan (and you should too! There’s great advice for whipping your blog into shape!) I couldn’t help but notice how much of a workout taking pics of myself for these outfit posts are. Gosh! So here you have it folks, the super hard workout I endure each time I shoot an outfit post :-) Click ‘read more’ to see my workout!

I’ve coined this one, the point and snap, inspired by the infamous “bend and snap” move from Legally Blonde. It’s all about the moment when you set up your camera for a shot and then wait for the self timer to *snap*. Repeat no less than 10 times because the perfect shot takes time to capture.

It takes a few times to figure out the perfect pose. While you wait for the camera to snap, think about your best angles, pose, and hold it. *repeat no less than 10 times*

We all like to switch it up. Since posed shots get boring and repetitive, we aim to catch the ever so covetable candid shot. You know, dancing around, moving, shaking, walking towards the camera, and occasionally dropping it like it’s hot. *repeat 3 times*

Last but not least, I end up laughing at 65% of the photos I take. Let’s face it, it’s a crucial part of the process since laughter burns calories. There you have it. My outfit post workout plan! Do you ever feel like taking your outfit photos is a workout?!

Wardrobe Staple You Need: The Neon Pink Blazer

Yesterday I gushed about my new neon pink blazer and showed you three cool ways to style it. A handful of you asked where you could find one of your own. Click ‘read more’ to see the options!

1) Silence and Noise Boyfriend Blazer at Urban Outfitters. While it’s not exactly neon pink, the color is still great! I love how she has the sleeves rolled up here and I’m also digging the fit.

2) Elizabeth & James Bruce Silk Crepe Blazer. This statement blazer is perfect! I know this post isn’t about styling but I just can’t resist how amazing the neon pink blazer is when paired with a more pastel pink slim tailored pant.

3) Rebecca Minkoff Becky Jacket at Singer22. There are two things that made this blazer a shoe-in on my list. First is the dramatic fold over lapel, second is the angled cut. It’s also silk crepe just like the Eliz & James blazer. I want to put it on!

4) Bright Angle Blazer from NastyGal. I chose this one because it has a similar angular cutto the Rebecca Minkoff blazer but at a fraction of the price. While it’s missing the dramatic effect the fold over lapel brought to the Minkoff piece, it is still a good looking blazer.

5) Miami Vice Blazer from NastyGal. It’s obvious why I love this one, this slightly modified version of the classic and cool neon pink blazer is haute and they’re right, it’s so Miami Vice. The contrasting black lapel, button, and folded over cuffs are what dreams are made of, at least for me, after seeing this blazer.

From a few weeks on the rack, to 1 minute in my hand, this purchase was fate and a no-brainer. Last weekend I instagrammed a picture of this lovely like neon pink number. I needed this blazer and so did my closet. Naturally, I took to the interwebs to see how other stylish folks were styling their neon pink blazers. Click ‘read more’ to see my top 3 picks!

1) Tailored. This girly take on menswear couldn’t be any more perfect. It’s a suit and the fit is perfect. The addition of the classic black pump and well, the neon pink hue, adds just the right amount of femininity to it all. I love it.

2) Denim. My first thought when I saw the blazer was OMG, this would look great with skinnies. I had to add this look to my list, since the blazer is styled in the way that I’d be inclined to wear it. One part neon pink blazer, one part sheer blouse, one part denim, and one part awesome accessories makes the perfect outfit here.

3) Color kaleidoscope. I have to admit, I always want to mix vibrant colors and wear outfits like this. Do I? No. I’m not that brave yet! But I do admire when others go for it! Which is why I chose this look to round out my list. I love love how she complements the color and prints in this outfit with a bright pink lip.

For this week’s edition of What Would You Wear? Wednesdays, I did my first interview! I asked my blogger friend Chris to dish all her personal style deets. Click ‘read more’ to see the interview!

Where are you living? New York City

Describe your style: I’m still trying to hone my true style but if I had to describe it at the moment, it would be Eccentrically Elegant. I love very structured, traditional, feminine shapes (but nothing pink!)— a-line dresses and skirts, bows, button-ups, etc…But I am also quite fascinated with menswear. I like to incorporate menswear pieces such as ties, bow ties, and men’s shirts and blazers to my everyday ensembles. Oftentimes, I can be found mixing vintage and contemporary pieces, that may render my appearance a bit strange, but if you really examine it, there’s elegance at its core.

How does living in NYC affect your style? Actually, not in the way one would usually think. New Yorkers can be very trendy and even those considered “stylish” most often look like they are donning a uniform. I look to see what everyone else is wearing and modify it in a way that makes it a lot more interesting than just a compilation of trends.

Where do you find inspiration when you don’t know what to wear? Hmmm… well when I had cable, the answer would have been TCM. Basically, I look to movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood, back in the days when getting dressed was a revered process. Day to day, it boils down to “What Would Grace Kelly Wear?” or “What Would Cary Grant Wear?”

Name 2 of your favorite items in your closet: Only 2?! Hmm… The vintage Hermes tie I am wearing in the picture has to be one of them. It’s so unique and goes with mostly everything as a belt or a bow. The other is my rag&bone dark-wash jeans because it’s so soft and comfortable. It’s definitely a default piece that can be paired with anything.

The weather has been pretty awesome here! The sun is out and when the sun is out, I’m happy. I was ever so inclined to bring this cream Barney’s Co-op dress out of my closet, it’s one item in my closet that’s really versatile. The Kara Ross preview was amazing to say the least. Refreshingly off-site [read: not at Lincoln Center] in a suite overlooking Central Park West, the venue was comfy and welcoming. Guests were invited to snack on a spread of tasty treats and browse Kara’s bags and jewelry at their leisure. Talk about my kind of party! I’m so happy Yanique invited me to this preview during New York Fashion Week! I knew I was going to love Lyn Devon’s collection when it was described to me as inspired by “New Yorkers in love”. We were pleasantly surprised when we stepped off the elevator at the Hudson Hotel penthouse and couldn’t wait to dig into the racks and explore.

Why I Love My Feathered Jacket

For Day 2 of Fashion Week, I chose to play with color and texture. I love this jacket! I’ve had it for about a year and have worn it less than 5 times. Tragic. It’s fabulous though, I always get compliments on it, and I wish I had the chance to wear it more. These maroon corduroy jeans are a new addition and have quickly become a staple in my wardrobe. They’re sleek, stretchy, comfy, and the rich color just makes me happy :)

If Fashion Week is filled with treats like this- no wonder I keep coming back, right? One of my NYFW highlights was the Rochambeau presentation. I was totally into the use of leather, accessories (the sunglasses and backpacks made for AMAZING style moments), and sleek tailoring. While I enjoyed the edgy menswear line last season as well, what really caught my eye this time around was the serious man candy.

What I'm Wearing: Dolce and Gabbana Dress

When I get a new haircut, I always tend to “match” my ensemble to whatever look the cut gives me. I won’t embarrass myself by explicitly naming the “looks” I’ve come up with for myself, but I do feel quite edgy.

For my trip to NYC, I KNEW I would have to see one of my favorite people in the whole wide world, Yanique. We hit up a few presentations (pictures coming soon, I promise) and she took these photos of me outside of Lincoln Center before I rushed off to my flight. Girl knows how to work a camera. *Snap*

What's in my Makeup Bag? #NYFW Essentials

Here are the products in my makeup bag I couldn’t live without for Fashion Week!

From left to right:

1) Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat- Luminizing Pen: I usually use this on the bridge of my nose and the middle of my forehead. I find that it makes my face look more alive, especially on those days where I feel….dead.

2) Diorshow Extase- Mascara: I apply this after my Diorshow Iconic mascara for that extra pop! It adds a dramatic effect to my lashes, making them look longer than they are.

3) Shiseido- Matifying Stick: The newest addition to my essentials. I apply this under my makeup, on areas of my skin that are prone to oiliness. It keeps my face looking fresh and not greasy (ew!) throughout the day and night.

4) Bobbi Brown- Cover up: No one likes spots, uneven pigmentation, or dark under eye circles! And I use this little piece of magic just for that. It evens out my skin tone perfectly, before I put on my powder.

5) Diorshow Iconic- Mascara: This has been one of my favorite products since 2003! While I don’t always use it consistently, I find that no other mascara treats my eyes the way Diorshow does. My lashes look fabulous whenever I use it.

6) Stila- Liquid Eyeliner: I NEVER attempted to use liquid eyeliner until I discovered this baby right here. It goes on with ease, it’s as if you’re using a sharpie and not eyeliner! You can draw a thin line or up the drama with a thick line and it’s perfect for cat eyes (although I haven’t tried that one yet)
